In 1889, Willis was quarterback of the football team and played against Wooster in only the second Ohio intercollegiate football game. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Willis also obtained an A.B. from Harvard. Willis was a 1st Lieutenant in the Signal Service during World War I (leaving for Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia on 2-12-1918, then to Fort McPherson in Atlanta on 1-1-1919). He was discharged in August of 1919. He was Chairman of the Department of Modern Languages at Denison University in Granville, Licking County, Ohio. He retired in 1937 after 44 years of service. In 1940, Willis wrote, Builders: Record of a Family of the Western Reserve 1850 - 1940, a history of his family.
